Preface
Research on Women and Education
This special Fall 2006 issue of Advancing Women in Leadership features the scholarly inquiry of women who presented at the 31 st Annual Fall Conference of Research on Women and Education (RWE), held at Wright State University in Dayton , Ohio , October 2005. The theme of RWE 2005 was "In Search of My Mother's Garden, I Found My Own": Celebrating the Past, Honoring the Present, and Preparing for the Future . RWE, a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AREA), was established in 1973 to provide a structure within AERA for the promotion of research concerning women and girls in education, and to provide a mechanism to facilitate communication among researchers and practitioners who are concerned about women in education at the intersection of race, class, gender, and culture.
In the encouragement of advancing women in leadership for gender equity in education, we present the following manuscripts:
Linking Literacy and Community Development: A Case Study of Women in New Orleans by Jennifer E. Subban, Ph.D., Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio.
Feminist Leadership: Building Nurturing Academic Communities by Tracy R. Barton, Ph.D., Bowling Green State University , Ohio .

It is our hope that you find this issue of Advancing Women in Leadership thought provoking, enjoyable, and that you look forward to subsequent issues.
